It is bounded to the north by Mauritania, to the east by Mali, to the south by Guinea-Bissau and to the west by the Atlantic.
Gambia is located in the middle of its territory. Its geography mostly consists of a large, semi-undulating plateau in the southeast, crossed by the Gambia, Casamance and Senegal rivers. The coast is sandy until Cape Verde and swampy in the south. The northwest is mostly semi-arid and the centre is dominated by savannahs. A tropical climate predominates.

The population is concentrated along the coast and along the banks of the Senegal River. Among the ethnic groups are: the Wolof, Fula, Serer, Jola, Mandinga, etc.

The economy is based on agriculture and the main crop is peanuts, followed by millet, rice, tapioca and maize.
