Bounded to the northeast by Laos; to the east and southeast by Vietnam; to the southwest by the Gulf of Thailand, and to the west and northwest by Thailand. Its geography is characterised by the large alluvial plain encompassing most of the central part of the country.
The Mekong River crosses the whole plain and is also linked to the river system that includes Tônlé Sap (the Great Lake).
Agriculture is the backbone of the Cambodian economy, rice being the most important product. In fact, rice cultivation represents 80% of this country’s land use. Other important crops are maize, tapioca, soybeans, sesame, palm sugar and pepper.
