With her work, she introduced herself in the feminine nature from a dreamlike and fantastic perspective, thus becoming in a writer hailed by all. However, due to many reasons, she never received the Premio Nacional de Literatura (Nacional Prize of Literature).
She was born in Viña del Mar on June 9th of 1910. Along with her parents, at age twelve, she moved to France. In this country, she graduated in Philosophy and Literature in La Sorbonne; in addition, she studied theater and violin and most importantly, she had contact with the surrealist flow.
In 1931, she returned to Chile and initiated her contact with intellectuals such as Marta Brunet and Pablo Neruda.
In addition, she started a love relationship with Eulogio Sanchez Errazuriz, with whom she was obsessed throughout all of her youth.
After a hurtful separation from her loved one, in 1933, she decided to go to Buenos Aires invited by her friend and consul Pablo Neruda. In this city she related with the writers from to the revista Sur (South magazine).
Additionally, in 1935, she started her literary career, by publishing his first book, La ultima niebla.
In 1938, he launched her most important novel, La amortajada, and in 1939, the tale El arbol, following with Las islas nuevas.
She returned to Chile in 1940 and started to write La Historia de María Griselda. The following year, she was imprisoned after trying to assassinate Eulogio, but she was only in jail for a couple of months.
In 1944, Maria Luisa immigrated to the United States, and lived first in Los Angeles and later in New York, where she met Raphäel de Saint-Phalle, who was an important French banker with whom she got married later.
During this time, she kept writing, mainly plays. She published The history of Maria Griselda in 1946 and worked for Unesco.
She visited Chile in many occasions, but in 1971, and after the death of her husband, she left the United States.
She settled in Buenos Aires and later she finally returned to Chile in 1973.
She died on may 6th of 1980, due to a general gastrointestinal bleeding.
