Rosa Amelia Renard Arigas was born in Santiago on February 8th, 1894. She was the firstborn child of the marriage made up by Catalan Jose Renard and Carmen Rosa Artigas Blanco.

The abandonment of her father meant a period of austerity for her family; however, at the age of 8, she entered the National Conservatory, graduating as a concert pianist six years later with the highest grades amongst the admiration of her peers and teachers.

Her talent earned her a scholarship granted by Pedro Montt in 1910 to continue her studies abroad. This way, Rosita, along with her family, traveled to Germany, enrolling in the famous Stern Conservatory. After her graduation, in which she was honored with the Liszt award and the Mendelsohn scholarship, Rosa Renard returned to Chile.

The First World War stopped the escalation of her fame in Europe, but not so in the United States, where she headed in 1916 to work as a teacher in the DKL Conservatory in Rochester.

The fame she attained during her stay in this country eased the appearance of new projects, which clashed with her mother’s plans, who forced her to return to Germany. The mother daughter confrontation lasted until 1925, year in which Rosa Renard decided to run away to the United States to continue her career. Living in a convent, she tried to give her career another push, although with scarce results. On August 28th, 1928, she married Czech Otto Stern, a lyrical singer, with whom she returned to Chile in 1929.

In the country, Renard was hired as a piano teacher at the National Conservatory. After completing her college duties, she moved to a country house in Pirque.

The arrival of Austrian orchestra director Erick Kleiber to our country meant a new stage in Rosa Renard’s artistic life. The outstanding director chose her to play the piano in one of his presentations, after which he was in awe of her talent. After this he invited her to begin an international tour with him.

Upon her return to Chile, Rosa Renard fell severely ill with lethargic encephalitis, a strange ailment that attacks the brain and leaves people speechless and with no movement.

She ultimately died on May 24th, 1949.
