Its main function is to mechanically and chemically break down ingested food in order to absorb the substances needed by the body.
A food bolus is formed in the mouth, passes to the esophagus through the pharynx and then enters the stomach.
The bolus is converted into a semifluid material called chyme by gastric juices produced in the stomach.
Later, chyme is turned into chyle in the small intestine.
The chyle contains nutrients that are absorbed by the body through the walls of the intestines.
During this last phase of digestion, waste passes through the large intestine, and water and mineral salts are absorbed.
