Its landscape is basically mountainous, except for a narrow strip in the south, where the Duars plains spread. The rivers are torrential and not navigable, but their waters are used to generate electricity.
The economy is mainly based on the agricultural sector. Its main crops are rice, wheat, maize and potatoes. Cardamom, apples, pears, plums and apricots are harvested for exports.
