The Norte Chico spans the regions of Atacama and Coquimbo.

The Region of Atacama is located between the 25º17’ and 29º11’ southern latitude parallels, and between the 68º17’ western longitude meridian all the way to the Pacific ocean. Its northern border is the Region of Antofagasta; its southern border is the Region of Coquimbo; the eastern border is Argentina and the western border is the Pacific ocean.
The regional capital is Copiapo and it is administratively split into three provinces: Copiapo, Huayco and Chañaral. It has a surface area of 75,176.2 km2 (which equals 9.94% of continental and insular Chile), a population of 254,336 residents according to the 2002 Census (which equals 1.68% of the national total) and a population density of 3.38 inhabitants per km2. It is the fourth least populated region in the country after Aisen, Magallanes and Arica y Parinacota. Over 50% of the population lives in the cities of Copiapo and Vallenar.
The Region of Coquimbo is located between the 29º02’ and 32º16’ southern latitude parallels, and between the 69º49’ western longitude meridian all the way to the Pacific ocean. Its northern border is the Region of Atacama; its southern border is the Region of Valparaiso; the eastern border is Argentina and the western border is the Pacific ocean. The regional capital is La Serena and it is administratively split into three provinces: Elqui, Limari and Choapa. . It has a surface area of 40,579.9 km2 (which equals 5.37% of continental and insular Chile), and 603,210 residents according to the 2002 Census. The regional population growth is higher than the rest of the country, making it one of the regions that had shown the most progress in recent years. In the time between censuses, local growth rates were 1.8 new people for every 100 residents, much higher than the 1.2 national average.
